Fernán Gómez, commander of Fuenteovejuna, is a nobleman who abuses his power. One day, returning from a fight, he sees that a wedding is taking place in the village. He then kidnaps his girlfriend, Laurencia, whom he disgraces. This produces a rebellion in the town that ends with a murder. No one can find out what has happened, because when asked about the murderer, the whole town answers: "Fuenteovejuna." Seeing the solidarity of the people, he does not continue with the investigation and the peasants are forgiven.
