Der promovierte Germanist und promovierte Religionswissenschaftler ist bekannt als kluger Berichterstatter aus Indien für große deutsche Tageszeitungen ebenso wie als geschätzter Übersetzer des bengalischen Literaturnobelpreisträgers Rabindranath Tagore. Er ist Initiator und Förderer sozialer Projekte in Indien.

Indien ist ein Land, das uns Europäer in allen Schichten unseres Wesens herausfordert. Diese Herausforderung hat mein Leben bestimmt. Das alles zu erleben und davon so viel wie möglich zu verstehen war ein großer Teil meines Lebensinhalts. Mir wurde früh bewusst, dass Indien und Europa unter- schiedliche Werte und Vorstellungen ver- körpern, die sich jedoch ergänzen oder gegen- seitig korrigieren können. Nur im Rahmen einer Autobiographie kann ich Indien beschreiben. Auf diese Weise werden meine Grenzen von Erfahrung und Erkenntnis deutlich, das bewahrt mich vor Generalurteilen. Und es beantwortet auch die Frage, was mich persönlich an diesem Land innerlich so beansprucht, dass ich - ohne Notwendigkeit - mittlerweile ein halbes Jahrhundert dort geblieben bin

Experiencing all of this and understanding as much of it as possible was a big part of my purpose in life. I realized early on that India and Europe embody different values and ideas, which, however, can complement or correct each other. I can only describe India in the context of an autobiography. In this way, my limits of experience and knowledge become clear, which protects me from general judgments. And it also answers the question of what is so demanding about this country for me personally that I have stayed there for half a century - without any need
