        About The Book

The task of learning a foreign language with limited access to native speakers of the language faces significant challenges. Professionals charged with facilitating this task have historically found many ways of addressing the problem, mainly by developing teaching materials that provide students with controlled contact with the language, tailored to their level of expertise and adapted to the basic features of their own mother tongue. In recent years, many of these materials have progressively become computer-based. This makes it easier both for the teacher to prepare them and for the students to access them. However, this has always had an important shortcoming: language speaking is by its very nature an exercise in communication between humans, and computers, helpful as they might be in

Storing and making information available had, at this point, lacked the adaptability and fluency of people. Nevertheless, the sheer volume of material made available by the digital explosion—whether in terms of multimedia resources, social networks, or mobile phone apps—has exponentially multiplied the possibilities open to language students for accessing content in other languages. In addition, the advent of generative AI, with its chatbots capable of holding almost natural conversations with their users, has expanded the possibilities beyond simply accessing static

        digital materials.

The papers compiled in this volume explore some of the options made possible by these advances. The first section includes papers that address the impact of specific technologies on language learning. The second section includes papers that address specific use cases in which technologies are applied to the teaching of specific languages. The final section includes papers that contrast the obvious advantages of these technologies with some of the potential disadvantages. Although there are significant benefits to be obtained from the application of technologies, there are some cases that may raise concerns, and it is also important that these be discussed as part of any effort to consider wider application

Overall, the papers in this monograph present an overview of a significant set of initiatives aimed at innovating the practice of foreign language teaching in India. Although they do not describe research at the frontier of current expertise in international terms, they compile ideas and best practices that have emerged at the forefront of foreign language teaching in the specific conditions that hold in India. As such, we believe they will be a valuable tool for language teachers and language learners that face similar challenging conditions.
