True “medieval laughing tales”, fabliaux are short stories told simply. They make a succession of popular characters who, by a deception or a good trick, seek to come out of their miserable condition. Most often, the author concludes with a moral lesson intended for his readers. But in the meantime he amused them with antics, profanity or picturesque scenes, giving between the lines a comic satire of society.
