In the midst of the historical novel, Hugo gave in to fashion and wrote Notre-Dame de Paris. Proof of his interest but also of the difficulty of such a project, he took three years to write a book which was to take him three months. Result: a very beautiful historical reconstruction of Paris at the end of the 15th century and extreme characters, exclusively driven by their desire. Everyone thinks they know everything about Esmeralda or Quasimodo thanks to the adaptations made for the general public, but do you really know their story?
